This serves a psychologic purpose and a pragmatic: With more and more input the program window gets overloaded if the font is too big. By gradually minimizing the font size all elements of the analysis stay within view.
The menue item "background" helps to select a background-color for the window that fits psychologically to the object of analysis. A suitable color shall stimulate the analyst while searching for data input. As the color is saved together with the analytical data the color of the background serves as a reminder when re-opening a data-file.
